Concert Reaction

14 Review Headline University of Iowa Bomb Yearbook 1982 pg 232 Thorogood 50-50 Concert

Laurie A. Wilson of the University of Iowa Bomb Yearbook offered this recollection of the Destroyers’ 50-50 concert in Ames:

“How sweet it is!”, Thorogood called out to fans, whom minutes before had been on their feet, chanting, “We want George!” The audience cheered as Thorogood localized his songs, singing about Iowa men, cops, girls, fictional “Ames, Iowa pen (penitentiary)” and downtown Ames.

Referring to the women in the audience, Thorogood said, “I knew Iowa was known for something besides growing corn”.

While touching fans’ heads with his guitar, kissing women, thrusting the microphone into the audience, letting a woman hold his guitar while he removed his jacket and walking out into the crowd, Thorogood emphasized interaction with the audience…”

14 George Thorogood 50 50 Tour Concert Review Headline Ames Iowa Des Moines Register 1981 Nov 6

On a far less positive note, Jim Healey of the Des Moines Register wrote a critical review of the Destroyers 50-50 performance in Ames:

“The show had spark and style, and Thorogood exuded an appealing mania.  But many of the musical arrangements were offensively banal, about as varied and innovative as a washing machine agitator in operation”.

Other Notes:  The 50-50 carpet makes an appearance in the first concert photo posted above.
