Concert Reaction

22 Agora Ballroom Columbus Thorogood 50 50 Concert Review Headline Ohio State Nov 16 1981 pg 11

Doug Curran of the Ohio State Lantern wrote in glowing terms about the Destroyers’ 50-50 performance in Columbus:

“Charles Young of Rolling Stone magazine once said that if Thorogood gave off any more energy, the government would lock him in a lead barrel and dump him off the coast of New Jersey, and Friday ‘s crowd probably agreed with him.

An expression of the brash Chicago blues sound which started in the fifties, the Destroyers music is not just an echo of that r&b tradition.  Their primal simplicity and energy hit an immediate chord of response , leaving the audience with the realization that this is the spirit that should enfuse (sic) rhythm ‘n ‘ blues rock ‘n ‘ roll at its most stunning”.

Other Notes:  This concert did not take place at the Cleveland Agora, as is incorrectly stated on some 50-50 tour date lists circulating online.

Fate of the Venue:  The Agora Ballroom in Columbus closed down in September 1983.  After renovations and upgrades, the Newport Music Hall opened at the same location in 1984.
