33 George Thorogood Delaware 50 50 Concert Review Headline The News Journal Papers Nov 27 1981

Gary Mullinax of Wilmington’s News Journal Papers said of the Destroyer’s 50-50 show:

“Everybody seemed to love George Thorogood last Tuesday night when he paused in his home state long enough to perform at the Carpenter Sports Building…  Seven young women rushed onto the stage to hug the world-famous rock musician during his second encore.  Thorogood seemed happy with the attention.  In fact, when one of the women got shy and seemed about to jump back into the crowd, Thorogood grabbed her and gave her a big hug”.

University of Delaware “Review” contributor Barbara Landskroener filed a detailed account of the Destroyers’ 50-50 concert in Newark.

Excerpts:

“Although seating was limited, it didn’t faze too many fans as they be-bopped and rocked on the gym’s tarp covered basketball court.

Those fortunate enough to be standing in front of the stage witnessed the heart, soul and magic that makes Thorogood’s live performance so renowned.

‘We’ll do all your favorite songs, son,’ [Thorogood] assured an over-eager fan.  He then called out for requests – ‘You say it, we’ll play it,’ – and raced into Madison Blues, jubilantly holding out the mike again to the frenzied fans in front.

Moving into rhythm and blues, Thorogood sang The Sky is Crying, during which the first of many female fans jumped onto the stage to give ‘Georgie’ a big kiss. ‘How sweet it is,’ he said again, with relish”.

Other Notes:

This cheeky note appeared in The Review classifieds shortly after the Destroyers’ concert.

In his report for the Duke University Chronicle newspaper, Rick Shoaf said of the Destroyers’ 50-50 concert in Raleigh:

“Thorogood and his band gave a free-spirited, two-and-one-half hour performance that kept a sold-out 3,000-plus crowd on its feet for the duration of the show…  The most enjoyable aspect of the show was Thorogood’s talent as an entertainer. Performing on stage his enthusiasm and exuberance were infectuous (sic), making his Music City concert all the more delightful.”

Opening Act:  There was no opening act for this concert.  Brad Stalnaker shares this anecdote about the resulting confusion on the night of the show:

“At about 9:30[pm] my buddy and I decided to go down and listen. When we got to the Lair EVERYBODY was still in the hall. The doors had not opened. We found out that GT thought there WAS an opening act, so they had not arrived yet.”

At the time, Larry Shaughnessy from the the West Virginia University ‘Daily Athenaeum’ student newspaper reported:

“More than a thousand rowdy fans packed the Lair Ballrooms Saturday night to see George Thorogood in concert, but George wasn’t there to see them.  Under the impression he was to perform after a warm-up band, Thorogood and the Destroyers were still on their way […] from their Friday night show in Columbus.  By the time George arrived and hit the stage, he was an hour and 15 minutes late and fans were angry.  At 9:30 the lights dimmed and the crowd roared in anticipation.”

23 George Thorogood 50 50 Tour Morgantown West Virginia Daily Athenaeum Concert Review Headline Rock Lair for 2 1-2 Hours

Larry Shaughnessy of the Daily Athenaeum filed a very positive review of the Destroyers’ 50-50 show in West Virginia:

“Not only was [Thorogood’s] voice at its best, but his guitar playing was even better than it is on his records.  His style is marked with energy, to say the least.  He duck walks, high steps, blesses the front row fans with his guitar and holds the mike out over the audience – while playing.

Those who missed the concert should not be too upset because if the rest of this 50 day tour is as great as it was here, George Thorogood is on his way to a long and successful career of ‘Saturday night jamborees’ in front of much bigger audiences.”

Source:  WVU ‘Daily Athenaeum’ student newspaper.  November 1981.

The WVU Vice President of Student Affairs received a letter of complaint about the lack of crowd control at the Destroyers’ Mountainlair Ballroom concert:

“Apparently the people in charge of controlling admission to the event simply gave up at some point in the evening and let everyone in…  Since there was no seating provided, the Ballroom was simply jammed from wall to wall with people.  Rhythmic bouncing or stomping that went along with the music made the floor move enough that it gave serious concern to my son and his date who forced their way out and left early…”

Of the Destroyers’ Boston 50-50 concert, Steve Morse of the Boston Globe wrote:

“By the end, it was evident that only Bruce Springsteen could keep up with Thorogood for sheer energy. Springsteen changes moods much more often – as opposed to Thorogood’s heavy reliance on straight R&B – but no one puts the hammer down any harder than George” (November 19, 1981.  Arts/Films section.  Pg. 1).
